All-American History

USILA All-American Teams

The All-American teams in men's collegiate lacrosse have a rich and storied history. Our game has been buoyed by the efforts of men who were proud of their All-American status and kept on giving back to the game years after their playing days. Most of the governing properties of men's collegiate lacrosse today are spearheaded by former All-Americans. The term "All-American" is not taken lightly in any walk of life in our society. The awarding of this status has not been taken lightly by the USILA.

In absence of a professional entity until only recently, excellence in our game has been measured and identified largely by its NCAA champions and All-American players. Our game has grown by leaps and bounds into a property that is luring significant corporate interest as evidenced by record crowds for the championships weekend in May and a national television audience. Recognition of these special teams and their top players is a key component for the "brand" of men's college lacrosse.

The men's college game is rich with history and lore from its early days at the turn of the century. The USILA existed prior to 1900 because of the emergence of these early programs (NYU had a team in 1877). The number of institutions sponsoring men's lacrosse has grown exponentially since the "golden years" of the 1950's. With the advent of a Division I NCAA Championship in 1971 and separate NCAA title games in Division II and Division III in 1980, the game is thriving as it provides competition for student athletes and institutions at all levels.

Representation and transparency in the selection process have always been the hot-button topics. The charge of the USILA has been to recognize the accomplishments of the student-athletes in our member institutions. The USILA has provided All-American recognition through presentation of certificates to the student-athlete and to the institution at an annual banquet at the site of the North/South All-Star Game. The USILA has an All-American selection committee chair for each NCAA division.

The USILA would like to recognize the past All-Americans by placing their names on our website. We are in the process of updating our records so that the All-Americans from our sport receive the most professional and caring recognition possible.

USILA Scholar All-Americans

In 1989 the USILA Scholar All-America Program was established to recognize student-athletes from USILA member institutions who have distinguished themselves academically, athletically and as citizens of their communities. The USILA Selection Committee selects an overall team representing Division I, II and III. The Scholar All-Americas are recognized at the annual Lacrosse All-America Banquet.

The criteria are:

A Scholar All-American must be nominated by his coach and be a student with a senior year academic standing and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (4.0 scale). He will have behaved in a manner that has brought credit to himself, his institution, and to college lacrosse both on and off the field. He must also be an All-American, a member of a North/South team, or an outstanding league or conference player. Please note that simply being a member of the North/South team and/or being All League/Conference does not make the Student-Athlete a lock for the award. Each Individual will be evaluated on a case by case basis by the Scholar AA committee.
